We are tourists and we want to do the winter sport.” (280) With Fredrick’s virile self, he is very comfortable with the ladies, especially Catherine, the woman he falls in love with. He, like most of Hemmingway’s heroes, have a sort of convincing effect on the ladies. Catherine is willing to leave her life and her job behind just so she can be and spend all her time with Fredrick; “ ‘We we will darling. I’ll go any place anytime with you.’ “ (252). In the novel, Barkley and Fredrick have an “idealized” love. They fall in love at a time that is as convenient as it is troubling for them. The couple is forced to keep their love a secret for fear of the army separating them so that the relationship does not interfere with their work. However, war also creates confusion, which enables the couple to slip away, almost going unnoticed. As the male in the relationship, Fredrick must be domineering; which he is, simply because he is a “Hemmingway Hero”. And being a domineering man he is able to handle any situation with the strongest emotions. Such as leaving the army; Fredrick had to face all his fellow soldiers and deal with their scornful looks and remarks; “I was going to forget the war. I had made a separate peace.” (243).
