The turn of the sonnet occurs at the second to last line - where it concludes that in realizing the mortality of things, it makes your love for them stronger. In my opinion, it states the theme of the poem that is an issue in most people’s lives – and that is coming to grips with loss and death. Many times you don’t realize what you had until its gone, and Shakespeare says this with his last couplet. When something is being taken away from you such as your youth, it often becomes much more dearer to you. The rhyme scheme of Shakespeare’s sonnet is simply ABAB. There are 3 quatrains – followed by one couplet. It clearly follows the format of most English sonnets and is a very simple example of one. The basic theme of the sonnet is all based on the narrator’s mortality – and the thought that all men must die. It is also interpreted as being about the loss of youth – and the fact that every day, you lose more and more of your youthful energy, youthful outlook on life, and youthful love of life.
