Analysing Social Comments

Most artists use symbols to communicate and portray there Social Comments accurately to their viewers. These symbols can be anything from certain materials to colours, shapes, particular tones and styles. Repetition is an important symbol which creates balance like in John Brack’s Painting ‘Collins Street, 5pm’ the dull repetition creates symbols such as the business people moving from work, these people also represent the evident gender imbalance which was a extensive problem at this time. Tim Storrier has also used symbols in his painting ‘The Burn’. One of the main symbols Storrier has used to address his Social Comment in ‘The Burn’ is the dead cow without a head which suggests it’s death. The harsh raging fire in this painting is also a symbol which interprets the irrational weather patterns of the outback. Mood is an important element which is usually evident in artworks through there colours, tones and lines. In John Brack’s work ‘Collins Street, 5pm’ mood assists in portraying it’s Social Comment to the viewer. It is not only the bland colours which suggest monotony in this work it is also the look’s on the people’s faces which imply boredom and a sense of restrained emotions...
