...hus, starting to define my perception of America. Growing up in America leaves everyone susceptible to the media and what they expose. The movies, news, and magazines all play a huge role in everyone’s definition of America largely because they portray information that seems to be widely accepted by the public. When shows like, the Bachelor get watched by millions and millions of people, it continues to define my idea of America. It tells me that Americans have accepted that it is okay to let a man choose at his leisure from twenty beautiful women. It further reveals to me that if choosing from twenty women based primarily on looks were possible for men, it would be the dream of many. The Bachelor and shows like it make a strong statement about our society and how we define ourselves as Americans. The good, the bad, but interesting. . . .When observing a finger painting, sometimes you are able to view beauty. Other times you can’t make anything out of it, but it always catches your eye because it is so different. America is different, and that is what makes our country so appealing to many. In the past century, America has seen beauty and ugliness in more ways imaginable. There once was a time when blacks were considered to be subhuman and useful for only cheap labor. This is one of the ugliest times in American history. If you fast forward to present day, the beauty of our nation is revealed in the irony that one of the most prominent women in modern times is none other than a black woman, Oprah Winfrey. America has it’s scars, this is no secret. The story told in “Then Came the War” is also a shadow that lingered over America for sometime and is one of those scars. Discrimination in America has been one of its weakest links. When you have a country that is built upon minorities, dislike and discrimination is somewhat inevitable by few who don’t understand “Americanism.” But those minorities are what make my definition of America colorful and random. Without all the differences that everyone brings to the table, America wouldn’t be what it is today with its bright people and rich traditions. In ...
