A new study on Dec. 21, 2000 provides important evidence that the new proposed Alzheimer’s vaccine may work. The vaccine triggers the immune system that turns off the production of excessive amounts of small protein called amyloid beta peptide in the brain. Excessive amount of this protein is believe to be the cause of the disease (Ungar, Pg. 1). Scientists aren’t sure, but this proves that they are very close. . Alzheimer’s Disease begins with mild problems and worsens as time goes by. The first signs of Alzheimer’s Disease are when the patient can’t recollect recent events or find the right words the express themselves (Graham, Pg. 1). Patients also have trouble learning new information and also remembering to do their usual tasks (Encarta, Pg. 2). For example: a lady tells her husband to take out the garbage while she goes to the store. When she comes back she finds the garbage still there. When she asks her husband why he didn’t take out the garbage he says that he forgot. This may be the early start of the disease, or it could have just been that he forgot. Tiredness and anxiety make the mental disabilities worse and it also makes it harder to cope with ordinary life (Heston, Pg. 1). As time progresses the person will sooner or later lose the ability to take care of themselves (Encarta, Pg. 1). Alzheimer’s disease has a cause, but it has not been discovered yet (Encarta, Pg. 4).
