With recent overcrowding in our cities, pathogens are able to grow faster than new drugs are being developed to treat them. Primary care practitioners should be able to present any means necessary to strengthen the immune system and promote general well being. What is alternative medicine? It is said to have an effect on the body by using any combination of natural, organic, or holistic therapies. All of these address the person as a whole and ultimately the individual is the healer in this self-care of a system. This type of healing can be traced back as far as the 19th century. Homeopathy first saw light in 1825 and holistic therapies gained popularity in 1920. The reason all of these “alternative medicines” became more main stream today, is a rise in people have been diagnosed with cancer and are looking for a way of healing their bodies without the use of harsh chemical drugs. Increased visits to complementary practitioners have led more physicians to research alternative treatments in order to better care for their patients.
