As the two sit in the building roasting the goose, Paul states that “We don’t talk much, but I believe we have a more complete communion with one another than even lovers have.” Through the war, Paul and Kat have formed an unparalleled bond. Being together helps them forget about the war for a brief time while they take turns cooking the goose. After they finish, they further show how highly they hold their friendships by taking a portion of the goose to Kropp and Tjaden, who are still under open arrest. The importance of friendship is also focused on when Albert is injured. Despite his own wounds, Paul carries Kropp to safety when Kropp becomes unable to go on. To comfort Kropp, Paul tells him that the wound is at least four inches above his knee, though it is only really one. Paul gives the army medical sergeant-major some cigars so Paul and Kropp can stay together. Then when Kropp develops a fever and will be put into a hospital, Paul fakes a fever so he can accompany Kropp to the hospital. As he regains his ability to walk, Paul refrains from walking around Kropp because he knows Kropp is upset that he will never be able to walk again. The greatest friendship in All Quiet on the Western Front is that of Paul and Kat, and when death separates the two, Paul loses his hope and will to live.
