alien ressurection

...ns where the audience are under the impression that the complication has been solved, but within time we are actually met with another complication. The narrative is also constructed using semiotic codes (Barthes) . Enigma codes are used, for example the audiences see Call get shot and fall to her supposed death but then are to later see her emerge alive and well. This leads the audience to question what Call actually is, maybe she is an Alien too. Referential codes are also present in the text and act as a historical locator. Elements of the text are referential to the future even though this is a fictional date. E.g. robots, advanced technology, futuristic guns, clothing etc. are all referential to the future. Action codes are also present and are constantly involved in the narrative, almost to frequently to select a particular example. Levi Strauss’s theories of binary oppositions are present throughout, in this case the juxtaposition between Human and Alien, a conflict that arises constantly and builds the basis of the whole films. This juxtaposition could also be said to be good v evil, in struggle to save the world. However we also see subversion present as a member of the human/good side is part alien (Ripley). This presents problems as the Aliens that they are trying to kill are technically Ripley’s children, therefore the theme of mother to child attachment arises. When it comes to character types we see an area that is somewhat subverted. The female hero and helper, Ripley and Call, present a subversion of our expectations of character type. We do not see the come male hero, but the female hero. Ripley acts throughout the film as a mother figure, the alien they are fighting is her child, and she acts almost indifferent towards its threat unless it gets in her way. The scene where Ripley kills her alien grandchild is a particularly powerful in portraying the idea of the characters bond with her child. She kills her mutant alien/human grandchild in order to save the cyborg Call, who almost functions as a surrogate child to replace the lost alien. Therefore we could suggest that Ripley also fill the role of a mentor figure for Call, Call however acting as a helper to Ripley. Together they follow Vogler’s hero’s journey to a certain extent There are a number of key themes that arise in Alien resurrection. Tension arises throughout a confrontation with gooey, seeping aliens. The films lingering shots of alien excreta point to the biological functions of the alien as the primary site of horror in this film, its grotesqueness a source of both fascination and dread. This suggests a theme of confrontation with the un-known or specifically in this case the un-humane, the theme that arises a lot in this genre. Another theme, which is, addressed concerns itself with biological reproduction and the psychic bond between mother and child, themes that have underpinned the development of the series. The film explores the reproductive capabilities of the central character Ripley and her nemesis, the alien queen. The film opens with a scene showing Ripley giving caesarean birth to an alien queen that is growing inside her. We later discover that the queen has inherited the human ability to give birth and in turn Ripley has gained the aliens strength and developed an almost telepathic empathy with her ‘...
