We also find out his other has been dead for 10 years and the other half of his personality is his mother. The moral we learn is that looks can be deceiving. We later find out what he is really like, and it is nothing close to what we first perceived him to be. 3. With Norman Bates, Hitchcock creates a new kind of horror hero, not a creature of darkness like Frankenstein, and not other worldly but something scarier – an ordinary person gone wrong. If our sympathies are aroused by Norman, what are we to makes of Maryanne? What do we make of Hitchcock’s sexual politics? I think Hitchcock did something great for the movie industry when he created Norman Bates. I don’t think a character like Norman has ever been used so effectively in a film as seen in Hitchcock’s Psycho. He paved the way for producers to create movies such as Hannibal. I don’t think anybody would have suspected him to be the cannibal he turned out to be. 4. Should we contextualize this films politics or require it to stand up to current standards and customs? I think contextualization of this film should be applied in its analyzation. Society and the way people have evolved have all been in the positive direction. In the past psychotic people like Norman Bates were probably knew for their time. This is depicted in the movie when Norman is put in a holding cell with a blanket. People would only see the aspect of him murdering 2 people and maybe 3 pertaining to the death of his mother. Now-a-days people are being admitted to mental institutions after committing murder because they are perceived as not normal. The way Hitchcock developed his characters are different from the way today’s society works. When Hitchcock developed Maryanne, he made her part of a crime. She was involved in stealing $40,000 and she was viewed as a criminal. Norman was an average guy acting his positive personality which is opposite in today’s society. Men are perceived as the masculine type who will do anything to protect the worthiness of their name. With that said they are the ones...
