...en Alexander Bell became a teacher of speech just like his older brother, uncle, father, and grandfather. Then in 1868 at the age of 21 he began a new job of teaching deaf people to lip-read, a system called visible speech developed by his father. In 1872 Alexander established a school for deaf-mutes in Boston, Massachusetts. The school later became part of Boston University, where Alexander Bell was assigned professor of vocal physiology. It was all because of Alexander’s near deaf mother that he began to get interested in sound, speech, and communications in the first place. Alexander’s inspiration for the invention of the telephone came from his work with deaf students and his interest in communications. It was in 1874 that Alexander Graham Bell found out that a man named Elish Gray was also working on the telephone. Alexander Bell thought that if he could invent the telephone first, he would become rich and famous, so he hired an assistant named Tomas Watson and worked on the invention night and day. On June 2, 1975, Alexander Bell and Tom Watson were working on the harmonic telegraph. Tom Watson was in one room with a set of transmitting reeds, batteries, and magnets. A wire went from his room to another room where Alexander was working. Alexander also had batteries and magnets, but instead of transmitting reeds he had receiving reeds. When Alexander Bell tuned one of his reeds, he heard a vibration from his partner’s reeds. On March 10, 1876, Alexander Graham Bell discovered the right frequency for the telephone. After Alexander wisely invested money in his own company, the Western Union Telegraph Company started to make telephones of their own and said that Alexander Bell stole their idea and that they would prove it in court.
