... get through their problems. With my characteristics of a hero in mind I decided Alexander Graham Bell is one of my heroes. Alexander Graham Bell was born in 1847 in Edinburgh, Scotland. In his lifetime he made many accomplishments which have affected the lives of millions of people. Even as a young man Bell was always thinking about how he could help people less fortunate. Which is exactly what he did throughout the rest of his life. Bell started by using his father's (Alexander Melville Bell) theory of "visible speech" a way of communicating with the deaf. He used these methods and began teaching speech to the deaf at Boston University. It was hard but he felt they deserved the chance to communicate. Something not many people would have tried. It was all this work with the human voice that sparked Bell's idea for his greatest invention. The telephone, which was first thought of in 1874 by Alexander Graham Bell. With this invention Bell and his newly found partner Thomas A. Watson changed the world. It was all because they dared to try something no-one had ever attempted that we can now speak to people on the other side of the world via telephone recievers and wires.
