He realized this when he saw Tess asleep and rapes her. When I read that part it made me very angry toward Alec. I don’t see how a man could take advantage of such an innocent young girl. Angel was a very outgoing gentleman. He knew how ladies should be treated. A review of the story online stated that Angel was “a young man from a good family drawn to Tess by her simplicity and her air of having suffered.” He never took advantage of Tess in any way. Angel did make one very critical mistake, though. When he learns of Tess’s past he becomes outraged and says the man who got her pregnant is her husband. Angel then decides that he needs time to himself, so he packs his bags and leaves. In the internet review it said Angel stated “write only if you’re desperate.” A year passed and Tess still hadn’t heard from Angel. She had written him letters and he never responded to any of them. One day Tess was out and she ran into Alec, who is supposedly now a street preacher. Running into Alec places Tess in an unusual situation. Alec then makes more pathetic pleas for Tess to marry him. Tess denies Alec her hand in marriage, but nevertheless they reunite. I don’t understand why she wanted to be with him other than she might have felt obligated because he took her virginity. Angel finds him self in a state of remorse toward Tess and he decides to find her. He searched until he found her staying with Alec. Angel was astonished when he discovered that she was with Ale...
