...d that her maid, Gladness had the symptoms of Aids. Over the years I had come to know Gladness very well, I called her Gaga. She had been on sick leave for two weeks and after numerous visits to the hospital she was diagnosed with septacemia. I could see that she was in agony and not well at all, she could not even walk from the bus stop to her work, which was about 1 km. She walked strangely and did little work but was terrified to give in and loose her job. Her employer had always been very open with her and discussed the Aids Issue with her on many occasions. She suggested that Gladness go for tests including an aids test but she strongly objected to this suggestion. She was terrified to have the aids test. She was given 2 months sick leave. We later heard that she had been in hospital for two weeks receiving treatment for the spreading infection. Gaga was told that she had the symptoms of aids but she was in deniel as there is a stigma attached having the virus. Legally it is a very difficult because of the patient – doctor confidentiality, unless the patient wants to let the employer know, they will never know. Gaga came back to work, but by this time the virus had attacked her brain and she was shouting and behaving very strangely. She walked into Nonny’s bedroom without knocking like she usually did.
