...vey’s ultimate goal was to settle in Africa and strengthen the social and economic bases for all blacks. But in looking at Garvey’s strong movement, one has to wonder if Garveyism was actually going to work. If Garvey transferred millions of black people from the Americas to Africa, would I t be successful? Better yet, would it solve the problem of the Negro? Garvey always had his people’s best interest at heart. Although many people disagreed with his movement and thought his approach was not the answer, his movement was viable and could have been what the Negro race was looking for to raise themselves out of the depths of oppression. In the year of 1914, Garvey formed the UNIA or Universal Negro Improvement Association. This movement, although strong and powerful by nature, had a humble beginning. Garvey, who is originally from Jamaica, was a very well read individual. With this tremendous reading and study, his mind began to grow and expand as he learned of the many hardships people of color faced through out the world. Many of his ideas formulated from readings of Dr. Robert Love, who was a black activist. Dr. Love preached and supported Pan African thought.
