These tasks are the beginning of independence or autonomy, the development of self-identity, and a feeling of self-esteem. Success may be dependent on the willingness of other family members, particularly the parents, to let go of their former positions of power and control over the young adult, while yet being prepared to provide a degree of closeness or emotional support when it is needed. Self-knowledge plays a key role in the decision making. If someone a good understanding of where their strengths are, what skills they have, and what their limitations are; what values are important to them that they must take into account; and what social pressures might be influencing their decisions, then that person will be able to evaluate the options more accurately.
