Abortion

...ntroduced(=einführen,vortstellen) the Termination of pregnancy Restriction Bill to the House of Lords in May 1996. If this Bill were passed the diagnosis of Down´s Syndrome would become illegal. The campaign (=Feldzug) for choice! Apart from all these abortion rights and law, people still(=immernoch) ask for a more liberal abortion law. Some people argue(=beweisen, erörtern) that the abortion law existing does not really give women the right to choose. The doctors are the ones, who make the decision and they are burdened with a responsibility for which they are neither trained nor necessarily suited. This can not be right for the women is the one ,who should decide if she is ready for motherhood or not. Everyone agrees on abortion done as soon as posible. Beside this people also argue saying that the grounds for abortion are badly defined because most of the doctors have immense power of judgement when permitting abortion. Some follow the law very strictly and some interpret it liberally. This sometimes lead(=Leitung) doctors abusing (=Mißbrauch) their power by including their personal options, even prejudices. And not all health authorities are botherd(=belästigen) to provide abortion to those who need it overall, about seven out of ten abortions are founded(=Geldmittel) under the NHS but it depends (=es kommt darauf an) where you live and how reliable(=zuverlässig) the health authority is. For example women in Northen Ireland are not entitled(=berechtigen)to the same treatment(=Behandlung)as those in the rest of the UK. ALRA is calling for a new abortion law, one which allows women the right to decid for themselves whether(=ob) or not they are ready for motherhood, at least in the first three months of pregnancy. Instead(=statt dessen) of counselling two doctors they could see one doctor. The doctor against abortion should have their views(=Sicht) but still have to sure a woman´s right to see or be referred to another doctor. They also want to makethis law become reality and so the health authorities should be obliged (=sher verbunden) to provide comprehensive(=umfassend) and easily evaible family planning, pregnancy testing, counselling and abortion services to meet the needs of local women. Hospitals should provide day care services, where women could refer themselves without first being required to see their GP. And they also want the women in Northen Ireland to be given abortion rights at least equivalent to those enjoyed on the mainland. ALRA would like to see the abortion rate reduced by better sex education and contraceptive use. Women find unplanned pregnancy and abortion a distressing experience and so women won´t be encouraped to use abortion instead of contraception. Prevention(=Verhüttung) is better than cure! Nobody is sure whether a woman is making the right choice but ALRA quarantees that the women are given the right information and support to reach a fully informedchoice, most women will know what is best for them and their loved ones. Every woman facing unplanned pregnancy are taxpayers(=Steuerzahler) and deserve (=verdienen) good healthcare regardless of their ability(=Fähigkeit) to pay and so the cost of abortion would be further(=weiter, ferner) reduced, consequently the NHS afford to do all abortions. To give women the right to choose on abortion, both in law and in practice , ALRA proposes the following 5 changes to the 1967 Abortion Act: 1. Abortion on request in the first three months of pregnancy 2. and then only one doctor´s approval(=billigen) up to 24 weeks 3. A duty on doctors to declare their conscientious objection 4. inclusion of N.I. 5. a duty on the NHS to provide abortion services. THE ARGUMENTS FOR AND AGAINST ABORTION The debate over the right to choose abortion presents people with a serious moral, medical and political dilemma. There are two opposing groups arguing on this topic. There are the „pro-life“ supporters(anti- abortionists) and there are the „pro-choice“ groups(abortionists). „Pro-Life“ supporters want a woman who is confronted with an unwanted pregnancyto stay pregnant and give birth to the child whereas „Pro-choice“ groups want a woman to be able to choose whether or not to abort. According to „Pro-life“ supporters a fertilized human egg is a human –being from the moment of conception and no one has the right to kill another human-being. They try to emphasise the importance of mother-hood to women. Anti-abortionists argue that if a woman chooses to have sex, she should also think about the consequences. An abortion can demage a woman both physically and mentally. For example: Many women suffer from the „Post-abortion-syndrom“, which is a reaction to abortion with symptoms such as :guilt, shame, depression and sleeplessness etc. Beside all this an abortion can be a profound insult to her clignity and intergrity. „Pro-life“ supporters also argue that an abortion can make it harder to conceive or can cause miscarriages later. Compared to „Pro-life“ supporters,“Pro-choice“ groups have a totaly different attitude towards whether or not to abort ,to take control over her body and determine her future. Women have as much right as men to plan their lives. A woman has the right to enjoy a happy, healthy life and give the same to her child if she can afford it. Even if a woman marries too young ,if she has to bring-up the child for adoption, she should be able to decide on her own. But the fact is that so many people sespecially men, are frightend to let a woman choose because it might reduce the control that men have over women´s lives. „pro-choice“ groups also argue that a woman is eight times more likely to die from a pregnancy than from an abortion and besides, an unwanted pregnancy is much harder than a „post-abortion-syndrom“ after an abortion. Women and the problem pregnancy. We all know what abortion does to the unborn child. But there is one other very important person involved. The woman What happens to her? One of the leading pro-life lobby groups reported that the number of unplanned pregnancies has risen steadily since abortion was legalised. Readily available(=verfügbar, gültig) abortion means that, if conception ocurs the problem can be solved at once. Time has changed and there for is more sexual activity at ever younger ages. But abortion might not be the best answer for a womans problem. Abortion is invasive (= ein massiver Eingriff) of women´s bodies whatever method isused, whether surgical or chemical. Surgical(=chirurgisch) methods can demage future fertility(=fruchtbarkeit) as well as cause immediate infection. Chemical abortion uses drugs that are immediately dangerous for some women, painful to use and can have still unchavted long term effects on women´s health. For some women the strain of coping often alone ,with their feelings afterwards causes more problems than any posed by the unwanted pregnancy. Many people think that the woman has the right to choose, butis this true? Those people closely involved with the pregnant woman know that if pregnancy continues they will be expected to do something to help her and her baby. If she has anabortion they need do nothing. She has the abortion alone. For selfish partners ,parents, friends the choice is simple. They do the choosing not her. Sometimes the pressure (= Druck) is gentle. The truth is, all these relations and friends could only support the woman by walking away teaching her to cope alone. And the fact is that large number of women do not have right to choose. But what about rape and pregnancy or religion and abortion? RELIGIONS VIEWS(=BETRACHTEN;SICHT) ON ABORTION! Countries which have banned abortion on religious reasons have very high rates of illegal abortion. Most religious leaders have put their views on abortion some time, but even where they have been strongly against abortion ,this does not seem to have had much effect on the behaviour of the women who fallow that religion every society seems to have abortion. Roman catholic church: According to John Paul II ,the pope of the Roman Catholic Church every human being has a sacred and inviolable (= unverletzlich) right to life. He has never proclaimed (= ausruf) an infallible (=unfehlbar) teaching on abortion, although the Pope and most bishops belive it is morally wrong. In practice, the Catholic Church is officially against abortion and in countries where it is the dominantreligion it has held out against abortion being legalised, not always successfully for example France, Italy and Spain. The official Canon Law of the church states that anyone who commits the sin of abortion automatically excommunicates herself from the church. This means that the person who decides to have an abortion has to think that her particular abortion is a sin against God. According (=gemäß) to the Pope the only purpose of sexual intercourse (=Umgang, Verkehr) is to conceive (=empfangen,Kind) a child and if a woman choose to abort the fertilized egg which is a human being (according to the Pope) of course the mother is responsible (=Verantwortung) for the „death“ of the „baby“ as well as the father. The Pope says that human life is scared and inviolable (=unverletzlich) at every moment of existence, including the initial phase which precedes (=vorangehen) birth. All human beings from their mothers womb belong to God who searches them and knows them, who forms them and units them together with his own hands, who gazes on them when they are tiny shapeless embroyos and already sees in them the adults of tomorrow whose days are numbered and whose vocation is even now written in the bode of life. There too when they are still in their mothers womb as many passages of the Bible bear witness, they are the personal objects of God´s loving and fartherly providence (=Vorsorge, Vorsehung) The Church´s Condemnations (=Verurteilung): John XXIII reaffirmed that human life is scared because „from ist very beginning it directly involve God´s crative activity“. Centuries ago and the church started to punish women who aborted and the situation has notchanged at all. The 1917 code of Canon Law for example punished abortion with excommunication. The excommunication affects all those who commit this crime and the idea of excommunication is to show the woman who commited the „crime“ that she chose the wrong path. By this reiterated sanction the church makes clear that abortion is a most serious and dangerous crime, there by encouraging those who commit it to seen without delay the path of conversion. The purpose of excommunication is also to make an individual fully aware of the gravity of a certain sin and then to foster genuine conversion and repentance. CAN ABORTION BE JUSTIFIED(=rechtfertigen)? A 1994 Roper poll found that while 55 per cent of Americans approve of abortion in the hard cases for rope, incest, fetal deformity, or even the life or health of the mother is threatend only 37 per cent support the use of abortion to end an unwanted pregnancy. Many Americans belive that having an abortion because an unwanted child would disrupt the woman´s life is equivalent to using abortion as birth control , a practice they condemn as selfish and immoral. According to Patricia Lunneborg ( a retired professor of psychology and adjunct professor of women´s studies) the majority of women who have abortions do so because their contraception fails and resulting pregnancy is unwanted, an unwanted pregnancy is actually a ralid reason for having an abortion. She maintains that many women are unable to take responsibility for raising a child at the time they become pregnant and that abortion is therefore an appropriate option for them. There are so many valid reasons why women abort. In 1990 a canadian research found out that condoms leak during intercourse nearly three times out of four. What are these women sup...
