...ersons do not value all human life. They want to pick and choose which individuals have value. Some have said that only those individuals with "consciousness of self" are human beings. Every legislator, every doctor, and every citizen needs to recognize that the real issue is whether to affirm and protect the sanctity of all human life, or to embrace a social ethic where some human lives are valued and others are not. As a nation, we must choose between the sanctity ethic of life and the quality of life. Men and women who shared a vision of the value of each and every individual founded America. They stated this vision clearly from the very start in the Declaration of Independence, using words that we can all understand. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” A woman certainly has rights with regard to her own body. But once conception occurs, her responsibility now extends to protecting the baby developing within her. Is no longer the right of her body that is in question but the right of the little living human being in side of her. Happily, here in America no one has ever been forced by law to abort a child. But the increasingly attitude about the sanctity of all innocent life, combined with the increasing ascendancy of government power, could well invite such a horror here. If a person can be killed because he or she is too young, too inconvenient or they’re sex is in question, then another person can be killed because he or she is too old or too dependent --or...
