A Worn Path: Examples of what to do
...lived in there younger years, but that is no reason to cease from enjoying life and appreciating the fact that you are still on this beautiful earth that has many things to offer anyone and everyone, even the old people of this world. Phoenix is described as a very old and small woman who walks “with the balanced heaviness and lightness of a pendulum in a grandfather clock”. It leads us to believe that she is weak and slow and that it will take her a great deal of time just to travel a small distance. We see that she is determined when she yells out to the path ahead of her for anything that is awaiting her to move out of her way. As she walked on, she faces more confrontations. We see that this little old lady, having as much trouble as she was having would still walk on. The reason this all enlarges our experience of being alive is because when we see someone like Phoenix having to sacrifice an entire day to a carry out a single simple task, we realize that even one simple little goal can give a person a reason for being, even if it is just for a day. Next “A Worn Path” is worth reading because it gives us examples of what to do. Phoenix never lets all the obstacles that she is confronted with stop her from continuing on her journey. From the very beginning of the story, Phoenix has all odds against her and she always chooses to move on. Phoenix gives us perfect examples of what to do when faced with a dilemma, and that is to never give up. In class we discussed how eighty-five percent of people have a tendency of giving up when they are faced with a challenge, and when we see someone like Phoenix, as old and slow moving as she is, be part of the fifteen percent that doesn’t give up, it kind of makes us feel a little weak willed when we let simple tasks get the best of us. Sure what Phoenix has set out to do may not be that big of a deal to most of us, but we have to stop and think of the perspective through Phoenix. She has lived a long and full life and according to the setting, which is about mid 1930’s, she has gone through a very rough time in her life. Still at her old age she give herself a reason to move on, not just through the path but through her everyday life. Phoenix refuses to just give up and fade away. That is a great example of how we should face our problems head on and just keep on moving. Again, all through this reading we are given examples of what to do not just for a simple task, but for any goal we set out to do. Finally “A Worn Path” is worth reading because it keeps our soul alive. Phoenix is most likely at that age were she has probably seen, and heard all of what she will experience in life. We notice this when the hunter points the gun to Phoenix and asks her if the gun scares her. Phoenix’s responded to the question holding utterly still “No sir, I seen plenty go off closer by, in my day...
