Instead, the man lingered on in a miserable state, while people watched to see him draw his last breath. Pelayo and Elisenda were able to make money at the old man’s expense. It just seemed a little too morbid for my taste. What was the meaning of the woman who was changed into a spider? The image of ‘a frightful tarantula the size of a ram and with the head of a sad maiden’ is enough to give anyone nightmares. Was the lesson about the woman a tall tale to teach children they should not disobey? The author concocted a fantastic nonsensical tale, with no particular rhyme or reason. The story lacked structure. There are a lot of loose details floating about that are never woven together...
