...analogy is a perfect parallel to that idea. When you go to the doctor, the first thing the doctor does is look at your file to check the status of your health the last time you were there. Next they check your health and compare. The doctor would not be able to make as accurate of a diagnosis with out this step. The point Botstein is making is that it is just as essential for a test to compare the improvement of your knowledge as it is for a doctor to compare the improvement of your health.
