A lot of Gene’s insecurities have to do with the fact that he sees Finny as leader that he must follow. When Finny starts the Super Suicide Society, he has himself and Gene jump off the tree at the beginning of each nightly meeting. Though Gene is very scared to jump each and every time, he still does it for fear that Finny might not like him if he does not (25). With the differences between both boys, Gene experiences new things because he follows what Finny tells him to do.
