The old lady asked, “Where do you come from, Mr. Shiftlet?” He then had no reply but later said, “nowadays, people’ll do anything anyways.” Mr. Shiftlet agrees to marry the woman’s daughter but then ditches her in a restaurant on the side of the street. She gave him money for their honeymoon and he spent it to feed the girl and he left again. Though he did keep his word and fixed the car and other things around the house. He can be trust worthy but he also can’t be. He is usually seen with a tool of some sort or he is sleeping inside the car. He works on the car more than he does anything else. He carries his toolbox around with him as he walks towards the old woman’s home. He folds his left arm sleeve up so it doesn’t just hang there while his amputated arm hangs around. He has an amputated left arm and wore a black town suit and a brown felt hat. He seemed to be a carpenter and carried a tin toolbox. Though it must have been difficult to fix anything around the woman’s house after he asked her if he could stay and fix things for the woman. The woman believes Mr. Shiftlet to be a trusting man. “I told you you could hang around and work for food,” The woman told him, “if you don’t mind sleeping in that car yonder.” She things of him as a good person if she’s allowing him to work around her home, after she just met him.
