A Place Where the Sea Remembers
... “Everybody needs a new beginning.” (85). Rafael and Esperanza begin a new life together through marriage. This relationship took a rather long time to encounter, however through the years of friendship they finally were able turn their friendship into marriage. I think Rafael’s mother had an impact on this relationship. If it were not for her, the two would not have to spend as much time together as they did. However, since Rafael took care of his mother for such a long period of time, he truly appreciated the brother stepping in to take care of her. As soon as Rafael and Esperanza were married, they were able to have their new beginning with one another. Cesar Burgos and Beto begin a new life apart from their family. Beto had a decision to make concerning school. He chose to receive his education, rather than go on the trip with his mother and brothers to Oxaca. Even though his family suffered a terrible death on this trip, he could do nothing to save their lives. Children tend to blame themselves for any devastating event that may occur with the family. They need to be reminded that it is not their fault. Cesar assures this to Beto, when they are at the location of the accident. Beto takes the entire blame for the accident, but Cesar assures his son it is not his fault. Cesar convinces his son that he could not go on without Beto with him as his son. The close of chapter eight begins their new life together. “They started off, toward the point down the road where the bus always stopped.” (101). As soon as they walk away from the scene of the accident they are ready to face the world with just the two of them. Though they will miss their family greatly, it is time to begin their new beginning. Luz Gamboa, a chambermaid states, “A woman never loves a man as much as when he leaves her…” (46). Though Luz feels it is best if she and former husband Tito are together, her life brings her down a different path. Near the end of the story, sparks may be flying between Luz and Caesar. It is evident Beto is happy with this new adjustment because he smiles as he watches the two dance the night away. This is apparent at the wedding reception. At the reception the reader may also see how each situation in the story comes together through friendship and family. The author, Sandra Benitez does not fully portray how the relationships between the two characters develop. This may be a new beginning for the two families to come together as one. Candelario and Chayo have worked hard and earned what little they now acquire. Chayo has a sister, Marta. The three of them, I feel, have new beginnings in each of their lives, more so then any other character. At the beginning of the story Marta was extremely close to having an abortion. Because few...
