Everything he went to school for, to be respected, not have to live in poverty, and not be the white men’s nigger. Tante Lou shows she thinks of grant as her only hope when she says, “…I wished I had somebody else we could turn to. But they ain’t nobody else” It is evident that in her mind Grant is the only one who can help Jefferson, and thus forth help her community to be freed from the cycle racism. In a conversation with Vivian Grant explains why Tante Lou thinks he is the only hope.
