A GIFT FROM FATHERLAND

...hat I have to smile to continue my life here without tears. However, in that morning, something special from my mailbox had changed my normal day. That was just a small package. It was tight up with lots of tape. There were so many different stamps on the package. Those are the stamps I have not seen for years. Some of them have images of Vietnamese fields. Others have images of Vietnamese girls in the traditional long white gowns. For real, I am not a stamps collector. All I learn by heart about stamps here in America is the First Class stamps, which mostly attach with daily mails. Therefore, just by looking at those unusual stamps, a vision of my homeland started to recall in my mind. I touched the stamps and smiled. Then, I looked at the sender’s name. One more surprise ! The package was from Lan, one of my best friends from middle school. It had been 10 years since we last contacted. At first when I saw the name, I could not even remember who she was. However, the little purple orchid icon on the address label had reminded me because she was the only friend who always used that icon next to her name ( Her name Lan means orchid ). I nearly forgot her, but she still remembered me. I felt my eyes soaked. I carefully cut off all the tape and unwrapped the package. The first thing I saw was a pack of coconut candy. Coconut candy is always the most popular candy for everybody in my country. Every time I taste it, I feel like I’m tasting the air of my count...
