Caffey tried to understand but he still felt it was inappropriate. Caffey had bargained with the prosecutor and received a lesser punishment of only six months in jail. Dawson did not care what he bargained for, he would not plead guilty. It was a matter of Honor for him. He would not admit to a murder in which he did not commit. His culture has the belief that you do whatever you are ordered to do. Following an order was considered a norm. He did not feel he should be subject to sanctions. This meant that Caffey had to get the details and find out exactly what was behind all this. He interviewed Colonel Jessup who was the unit commander in Cuba. Caffey had accused him of ordering the unmilitary-like conduct (code red) on Santiago. Jessup had admitted to it and felt that he was more important than everyone else. He showed ethnocentrism when he said that Caffey will never be as important as him. Jessup had broken the law but in his culture, he did not feel as if it were a law. The conclusion of the movie was that Dawson and Downey were convicted of unmilitary-like conduct and were to receive the dishonorable discharge. This crushed the two marines because that was the only life they knew; the military. Now they will have to go to the outside world and experience cultural integration. This relates to our culture today it is an exact replica. There are many subcultures of mainstream culture. There are probably more then 20 different cultures in the United States alone.
