A deeper meaning to the story of Hucklberry Finn

... story because it was always present throughout the book and contiguously used by Huck and Jim. The raft was the first thing to bring Huck and Jim together. The two of them collected drift wood from the Mississippi river to construct the raft. This raft was used to get up and down the river taking the two anywhere they wanted to go along the banks of the Mississippi. I can sum this up by saying the raft stands for freedom, hope and saftey. It also shows that much like the raft was never destructed it shows how much the relationship between Huck and Jim has been tested and no matter what they went through , they always came out together caring more about each other every time. Secondly, the issue of the guns in the story should be discussed. Every time a gun is mentioned in the story, a new dangerous situation occurs. Such as when the Grangerfords and the Shepardsons decided the would bring their guns to church, this only showing the hatred for the others family. To me guns mean fighting or a time of war. Huck had a gun in his house and almost shot his father while his father was passed out in the chair. Another time a gun came into play was when Tom was shot towards the end of the story. All these instances are showing that the use of guns in the story are symbolizing hate and war in a sense. Finally we can discuss the river. The river was a free flowing way out of town. This can be associated with an escape or an easy way out of trouble for Jim and Huck. Using the raft which already means a lot to the story, the river provides easy access to the south which is a place where Jim may not want to go.
