...hen theme is mentioned, the thing that comes to mind is the real meaning or what the feel is of the certain situation or scene. In the British version of the movie the theme of the woods was expressed in the way where it portrays what Shakespeare wanted it to look like. The woods cover the middle three acts and bulk of action for the play. It is a world in its own where fairies reign, magic is everywhere, and fantasy is reality. It is here that all of the magical events take place. People fall in and out of love, they curse, and fight in the realms of the woods. They also eventually make amends and create harmony and bliss for everyone in the woods. This theme of the woods was portrayed simply in the British version with hanging light bulbs to show the simplicity and at the same time the magic that holds in store for the lovers in the play. On the other hand in the American version of the play the woods are revealed in a totally different way. The woods are shown like they really are in reality which totally erased the meaning and symbolism behind the woods. The theme behind the woods was not revealed to the audience in the same way as it was in the other version. This shows how the themes in the British version of the play where stressed more and shown in better ways than in the American version where the movie was just to put a play into a movie and in some cases ignoring the themes of the play it self. This shows how the American version was based on commercial use rather than the show the real meaning of the play where in the British version the real meaning was shown even with the small budget that this movie had. Of course this is only one of several other differences between these two movies. A play is usually performed on stage and in front of an audience but here Shakespeare’s play was put into a movie. Usually when a play is preformed it is approached in a serious manner and this was another difference between the two versions of the movie. The British version of the movie had taken the script of the play and preformed it a serious and informative manner. It was precise and of course it had to have a serious tone through out the whole movie while the play was being preformed. For example one of the main parts where this idea is obvious is when Hermia and Helena meet after both Lysander and Demetrius have fallen in love with Helena and Hermia is in anger. During this part where Hermia says to Helena, “Little again? Nothing but “low” and “little”? Why will you suffer her to flout me thus? Let me come to her. During this part in the British version Hermia is shown trying to get to Helena and actually use violence to let out her fury and rage of what has happened. On the other hand in the American version this scene was not given the seriousness and the mood of anger that it was given in the British version. It was simply acted out as if it was another normal scene and the real emotions that Hermia express during this scene were not shown. This difference can also be linked to the earlier difference because just like before, the approach that each movie took towards to this play was obviously dissimilar and as a result of this each version has its pros and cons. Finally, as the title suggests, dreams are an important theme in A Midsummer Night's Dream, they are linked to the bizarre, magical accidents in the forest.
