The story is told by means of a diary, whih the narrator secretly keeps against the orders of her husband, who believes that this intellectual effort is contributing to his wife's nervous condition. The narrator, who is a new maother, has been brought to a country house for a rest cure by her husband. He selects for her the room with the "hideous yellow wallpaper." The former nursery, were the "widndows are barred for little children" and the bed has been nailed to the floor. "The Masque of the Red Death" covers a period of six months, during the reign of the "Red Death." The Masque of the Red Death takes place in the suite, which consist of seven very distinct rooms.
