If you were trying to find work in this time period, then you were either not able to find it or were crowded together, under payed, and under fed. If you were lucky then you would get the latter of the two. While on the way to California, the first to die was grandpa. The first of the movie said there were three things they were searching for: new home, work, and a since of security. The fact that to get this accomplished a person would have to die is what just ate me up. The next person to die was grandma but instead of stopping and burring her right away they had to keep going until they had reached California so that they would not have to stop.
