...n Andy’s birthday he receives a Buzz Lightyear the newest and coolest toy on the market. It is out with the old and in with the new. The other toys are greatly impressed with Buzz and Woody takes a backseat as they start to point out his flaws. This implies the idea that newer is always bigger and better. At one point one of the toys comments “the dolls must really go for you” and Bo Peep wants him to be her moving partner when Andy and his family move in a week. Woody is not impressed and sees that Buzz believes that he is really not a toy. Woody wants to fight for Andy to stake his claims, as most battles are usually fought over. Andy has an evil neighbor, Sid. Sid is the typical evil character in Disney movies that must be fought or overcome in order for the happy ending. Woody and Buzz fall into the hands of Sid, who has the reputation for mistreating toys and doing bad things to them. Sid wears a t-shirt with a skull on it, has a sticker in his room that says “I Love Explosives,” and has a black light and black light posters to show that he is not a typical kid like Andy who has clouds on his walls. Sid has a little sister who is shown having tea parties and playing with dolls, as little girls are expected to do. At Sid’s house Buzz watches a commercial for Buzz Lightyear toys and realizes he is not a real space ranger. Buzz gives up hope of ever returning back to Andy. As Sid is about to destroy Buzz, Woody breaks down and tells him how Buzz is too cool and Woody has no chance against him. Woody tells Buzz to get out while he can and not to worry about him. Buzz cheers up after Woody tells him all this and helps free Woody. Buzz is whisked away by Sid and it seems like it is too late and Buzz will die. Woody, using his sheriff leadership skills, rounds up all of Sid’s “misfit” tortured toys and they plot a plan to save Buzz. The toys surround Sid and all come to life telling Sid that he must take good care of his toys. They teach Sid a lesson. Buzz thanks Woody and Woody tells Buzz he’s the only friend he’s got. This shows how lessons are learned and that friends are supposed to help friends in bad situations. Andy however leaves for his new home without them and they must catch up with him. By working together and with the other toys they safely return to Andy. If they didn’t work together they would have never made it and there would have not been a happy ending. This story shows how you may have a friend in someone that you didn’t even know about or expect. Woody and Buzz were rivalries, but when it came down to it they were the only friends each other had and they worked together to save their lives. The family portrayed in the movie was a family of three. Andy, his sister Molly, and the mother made up the nuclear family. There is no mention of a father figure. The mother is the head of the family. Andy’s mom asks him to help out with his sister in the beginning of the movie and he gets her out of her crib. This implies that Andy may take on some responsibility that a father might if he were there. The family was white, had a minivan, and lived in a type middle class neighborhood. This reinforced the idea of the average white family in the 1990s. Most were single p...
