Would a caring mother only think of herself and not her children? The main character, Mrs. Sommers does this exact thing in the story “A Pair of Silk Stockings” by Kate Chopin. Mrs. Sommers finds herself the unexpected possessor of fifteen dollars.(153) She knows exactly how to spend it. She plans on buying shoes, clothes, and hats for her children.(153) Her whole attitude changes when she goes shopping and all the memories about living a luxurious life in the past comes back. Mrs. Sommers generously spends the fifteen dollars on herself instead of her children because of deprivation and temptation, pride and nostalgia. First of all, Mrs. Sommers spends all the money on herself because of deprivation and temptation. She finds herself looking down on a pile of silk stockings and touching it with her bare hands. She goes on feeling the silk stockings when a girl asks her if she would like to examine them.(154) “She felt the soft, sheeny things as they glide serpent like through her fingers.”(154) While touching the silk stockings, it triggers the urge to buy it.
