Marcel Desailly has been handed a three-match suspension by Uefa that will rule him out of the second leg of Chelsea's Champions League semi-final. The Chelsea captain clashed with Fernando Morientes in the second half of the 3-1 first-leg defeat to Monaco. Uefa looked at video evidence of an elbowing incident before passing judgement on the French international. Desailly has until before midnight on Monday 26 April to appeal against the decision for violent conduct. Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri admitted the loss of Desailly would be a major blow to his plans of overturning Monaco's two-goal advantage. He said: "We'll miss him a lot as his experience is very important for us. I hope my other defenders are in good condition." After the match Desailly refused to discuss the incident which infuriated Morientes, who appealed in vain at the time for any action from the officials.
