First of all, the most important impact of illustrations in printing is the democratisation of printing itself. ... Even if books were still mainly used by 1st and 2nd class people, a first step torwards democatiation of printing products was made. ... In comparison, when pictures firstly started to be published in ‘huge amounts’ when printing started, the same pictures were used several times and still they were impressive to the people. ...
