Writing Consultant Training There are many Writing Centers located all across the United States, and worldwide, in colleges and universities, to help the students at those schools improve both their papers as well as their writing style. ... The directors of the center strongly believe that it takes a lot of skill and dedication to become a consultant, and they have a very interesting and unique method of training new hires (or students) to adhere to the quality level they have already achieved. ... I underwent the spring consultant training course, which was taught by the assistant director. From the point in time that I first walked into the center, I knew that the job training would be both entertaining and difficult, and I was not let down. ... The assistant director reiterated, several times throughout the semester, that an effective consultant needs to be able to maintain both roles simultaneously when dealing with a writer. Since working at the Center isn’t a run-of-the-mill job, the training wasn’t boring either. The three parts of the course were web-based, instructor-led, and experience based training. ... The observation also gave the consultant a chance to get feedback from someone who had more experience, to improve their weekly sessions with their writers in the future. ... She felt, just as I did, that the consultant training course would enhance her role as an instructor in the future. ... That way, if another consultant had a similar problem somewhere in the future, they could go back in their database of knowledge and think about a different way to attack the circumstance, without causing a problem. ... Also, at times, he would use some standard training techniques, like giving out prizes and such, when we did well on a certain aspect of the course. ... Although the training class was just another training class, it was quite enjoyable for all the people involved in it and hopefully everyone had a great time while taking it.
