... The setting in which a story takes place can make all the difference in the characters actions, behaviors, and personalities. This is portrayed very dramatically in Henrik Ibson’s “A Doll House.” In this story, the characters, the mood, and the plot outcome all significantly revolve around one central point, the setting. Ibson’s choice of setting, a large elaborate house in Norway; time in the 1800’s, enhances the dramatic actions that take place in the story between a husband and wife. ... The setting contributes more significantly to the fact that women aren’t allowed to borrow money, under any circumstance, without the co-signature of a man. ... Blinded by his pride, a husband in the setting of the story, only concerned with his own reputation is willing to put her away, despite the love for him which prompted her to it. ... She realized that her life in the house had been a lie, as well as her and her husband’s love for each other. She thinks of herself all of the sudden as nothing but a doll, trapped in a doll house, treated as a child, or a doll would be. ... “Just as Nora’s game is clearly one thickened in such a pernicious web, her crawling out from under bordet unmistakably her ultimate extrication from deception, as she leaves Tovald still hopeless with his doll’s house” (Drake).
