Problem
The management of Imatron Systems, Inc. ... Two senior level engineers employed by ISI, Ira Lovas and David Bennett, who play a central role in the development of important components of the Satera project, cannot agree. ... The ability of Gary Pinto to effectively manage conflict will heavily influence the outcome of this case.
Diagnosis
The cause of our problem is primarily due to a communication breakdown, Pinto’s inability to identify and manage conflict at an early stage, and the problem-solving methodologies employed by Lovas and Bennett. Lovas had troubles decoding (Text, 257) Bennett’s ideas which eventually lead to “nasty, unproductive, bickering” (Case, 1). It is reasonable to expect a moderate level of competitiveness and disagreement between team members, but it appears as if things have gotten out of hand early on. Solution
The two engineers discussed in this case are described as intrinsically motivated individuals who take pride in their work and are highly motivated. ... Telling employees to work out their troubles on their own, grow up, or shake hands and get along may work occasionally, but most of the time the conflict will only be sent underground to resurface later in more unproductive or destructive ways. A better approach is to have employees regularly meet with Pinto to assist them in their own resolution of the conflict. ... Given the complex nature of this project, the Satera project is no exception. ... edu/conflict/peace/example/fish7513. ... Placing him on a project team such as Satera where his risks only seem to waste time and cause discord between other members.
