Children’s comfort literature There are many good reasons for reading to your children. Some of these reasons are for the enhancement of education, to help children over come tragedy and to help them prepare for medical procedures. These are just a few of the many excellent reasons. Reading to children provides important language and picture based stimulation, and provides them with positive associations and strong motivation around learning to read. While reading does not teach children to read it entertains them and provides strong literacy skills. These skills will enhance children’s need to achieve in school in the years to come. “By hearing language spoken correctly in meaningful sentences, you begin to imitate the patter-both in what you say and in what you write”. (Trelease, 49) You can start encouraging reading by reading while your children are still in the womb. Although it sounds funny, studies have shown that children recognize and understand common voices while in the womb. The voices will often times calm a restless baby. “Reading aloud to children beginning as early in their lives as possible and continuing through the grades will expose them to a rich, organized and interesting language model, they will at least have as an alternative to the tongue-tied language of their peers”. (Trelease, 50) The more children are read to and learn to read as they grow they will be better spellers and do better in grammar. Reading also helps enhance children’s abilities to write. The enhancement of spelling comes from the words that are read in sentences and paragraphs of a book.
