141 years ago, a few words of unity broke the shackles of slavery that would forever revolutionize the United States of America. On November 19, 1863, Abraham Lincoln delivered an address at the dedication of the Cemetery at Gettysburg. Lincoln avoided divisive language, and instead used democratic diction and repetition to move beyond past quarrels between the Union and Confederate to further unite them as a nation.
Lincoln purposely avoided divisive language in his oration.
