In this essay I aim to examine whether this succession is actually an advance in knowledge or whether we are seeing many different theories being used to explain the same idea. I will scrutinize this subject area comparing how rationalists and non-rationalists perceive the advancement of knowledge. ... The `Royal Road consists of 6 main theoretical advances. ... The first conception to be discussed is the conventional theory that the succession of a state of knowledge or enlightenment is replacing the previous state of ignorance. This is basically explaining that the formation of new theories is simply `filling in the gaps of the previous knowledge conjecture. ... In the field of sociology rationalists believe that the theories we have observed in the recent past have all progressed from the preceding theory; hence finding ourselves witnessing advancement in sociological knowledge. ... In some cases the conjectures used in different ideas are similar to others used in the past. ... Davids suggested that in reality the development of industrial sociology does not consist of many random theories made up over time. ... In this way researchers in the sociological subject work in co-operation in order to continuously develop an ever-expanding field of knowledge. This can be exemplified by the development of the Hawthorne studies created to show the move towards the human relations approach. ... The whole objective was to observe people working in different conditions and social environments. The research team explored different illumination experiments that required workers to carry out their usual jobs under several different illuminations. ... Even though workers need to be monitored on their development there is no need for 24 hr surveillance. ... Eventually using these conclusions they will form a new improved version of that theory which will add on to the advancement in knowledge. ... This is implying that the succession of theoretical knowledge may not be as connected as once thought. ... However, the technological advance was seen to be connected more with new innovative ideas than to a succession of knowledge. ... This movement in accepted action cannot be associated with improving the resources you have (filling in gaps of knowledge), it is simply a novel idea that has appeared that increases productivity rates. This succession, though innovative in its development, is still classed as an improvement to the previous theory; hence, it still fits the conventional view of the sociological advancement of knowledge. Through studying methods of theoretical development, I established that many approaches to conjectural advance exist that incorporate a conventional view. ... This insight into a fields development showed various researchers studying the same topic area. ... I will now concentrate on non-conventional views on how we have arrived at the present days succession of sociological knowledge. ... In our case the non-conventional view implies that the succession of knowledge throughout time is not linked together, neither is it an advancement in knowledge. ... We have to this point discussed how internal factors involving knowledge succession have occurred such as factual coverage. However, external factors such as personal fashions and trends have played no part in our evaluation of the development. ...
