Before Tommy’s death, Marcus is an apathetic gang leader who about no one but himself; after Tommy’s death , however, Marcus transforms into a person with genuine emotions and memories. ... After Tommy’s death Todd is surprised by Marcus’ change; Todd says, ”Marcus turns around to look at me and I’m kind of surprised because it seems like for the first, he’s really looking at me. ... This quote shows the reader that Marcus was affected by Tommy’s death. ... Tommy’s death break’s down Marcus’ once tough, apathetic nature, just as it subdues Ezekiel’s violent nature. Tommy’s death affected Ezekiel by making him realize that he must change his violent ways to more peaceful matters.
