What is the nature of the new super-highways we – and so many other developed and developing nations – are now building and utilising? Are they indeed super highways or super hype-ways?
In 1995 the notion of an emerging super highway had traditional, first media-age outlets fascinated. Journalist’s hyped and prophesised the Internet’s potential as an information super high-way - the ultimate communications and knowledge vehicle. In that year alone, there were 4,562 references to the ‘information super highway’ in major United States newspapers , while the term ‘e-commerce’ (the word on everyone’s lips today) received a substantially smaller 915 mentions . Almost a decade later, the notion of an ‘information super high-way’ sounds outdated. ... From this perspective, it appears the term super highway was indeed a super ‘hype-way’, used to entice citizens from first and second world countries to become participants in a new and borderless market place – and thus, the age of e-commerce is now upon us. ... A company can now become an international force as the availability of information extends beyond all geographical and time barriers and the nature of the market contact becomes ‘virtual’. ...
Another positive outcome of the super high-way for businesses are the ‘cutbacks in the costs of production factors, and improved efficiency and effectiveness of production. ... The super high-way allows businesses to deliver their products to their customers at a much smaller cost. ...

The public sphere reserves many concerns in regards to the nature of the super high-way. In particular, the anonymous nature of the super high way calls for a strong presence of absent trust, as the identity of whom you are receiving information from, or who you are sending information to is often unknown.
