The systematic workings of the educational system has been at the core of public and private debate since the early nineteenth century. ... A major issue being studied today is the affect of gender inequality in the education system, especially in the classroom. ... It is believed that both boys and girls may be held back academically in certain subjects due to the differences of each gender. This is more commonly known as the ‘gender gap’ in education. Many people believe that the answer to this problem is to separate girls and boys into same-gender classrooms. ... It is important that the teacher is treating each student equally and fairly and not favouring one gender over the other. If the problem of gender inequality is to be fixed by implementing same-gender classes, the gender gap issue must be researched with regards to the negative and positive implications it would have on the social aspects of the students lives. ... The first studies conducted surrounding gender issues in the education system were by feminists in the 1970’s and early 1980’s. ... Consequently, this socialization mean that boys and girls respond very differently to the curriculum, rules, and educators within the schooling system. ... From the previous examples, it can be suggested that schools and teaching styles have the ability to introduce and reconfirm gender specific abilities, identities and roles that are already evident in society. ... Although this ideal is fading as the years pass by, the education system is partly to blame for putting this gender specific way of living in peoples heads. ... As was concluded in Thomas’s (1990) study, this gender channeling meant that girls were not being given the same opportunities to qualify for prestigious university programs, nor would they be able to enter into high-status employment (Francis, 2000: 5). ... This can be related again to the socially constructed gender roles that create a negative image of a woman being employed in a male-dominated sector or in a corporate managerial role. ... It was felt that each gender should be allowed access to a full education with proper resources. ... Although the remnants of gender specific schooling is written in stone above entry ways into schools, the debate of separating the genders for the benefits of learning is still under discussion.
