the witchof black bird pond
Some say that The Witch Of Blackbird Pond, by Elizabeth Speare is just an affirmation of the status quo as far as women are concerned. I would have to disagree. Many women in the Wethersfield community did conform to the typical 1600 lifestyle. As the main character, Kit was a bit different from the beginning of the story. As a teen she sets sail for a whole new world, moves in with family she never met before, and was forced into a completely different culture then what she was accustomed to. Kit moved from her grandfather’s plantation in Barbados, where slaves did most of the chores. Kit had no experience with housework, or even wearing plain clothes. She conformed to that part of Puritan lifestyle when she moved in with her Aunt Rachael’s family.
