1st Draft Essay 3/The Power Of Language In the text " The Writer At Work", the writer James Baldwin first starts off the essay by bringing up the argument of "St. Paul de Vence, France concerning the use, or the status or the reality of black English is rooted in American history and has absolutely nothing to do with the question the argument supposes it self to be posing". He gives the reader his opinion that the argument has nothing to do with the language but with the role of the language. He feels that language reveals a person and defines it as "the other", which in this situation is "the other refusing to be defined by a language that has never been able to recognize him". Baldwin seems to be a bit racist in a sense that he thinks that Black English isn’t a language today because of white people and the slavery that went on years ago. I personally think that black English shouldn’t be considered a language not because of any racist reason but for reasons concerning the nation’s common language. I feel that it’s fine to have your own personal way of speaking to your friends and family but when it comes to the public or professionally, there has to be one language that everyone can communicate through it being your native language or not.
