Philosophes were a group of people who wanted the answers of how to take full advantage of human promises regarding the goals of continuous and unlimited progress. Cesare Beccaria proposed the idea of a more humane approach to the justice system. He believed that the punishment should fit to the crime broken. In 1764, he wrote his Essay on Crimes and Punishment, where he introduced new ways of punishments. In is ‘Essay of Crimes and punishments’, he argued that the punishments should have its goal to what to do when a crime is broken and that broken crimes won’t occur again. I agree with Beccaria’s idea because then people would be punished to what crime was done. For example, if a person stole an eraser, he/she will only be punished by paying a fine or to volunteer work. However, if you stole a car, you would be punished not just by paying a fine, but you’d also have to go to jail. Therefore the crime made should determine the punishment to be done. Also, Beccaria’s idea was to create a better society, and that when punishment is given to the person that committed a crime, there should be an increase of happiness. I also agree with this idea of his as well because when a person who committed a crime, we should punish he/she, so then no more of that crime would be committed again instead of having more people of commit that crime again.
