The old man in the sea starts of with an old fisherman, named Santiago, in Cuba who has gone eighty-four days without a catch. Santiago has a friend named Manolin who used to sail with Santiago before his parent’s order him to sail with another sailor, but despite this Manolin still helps the old man to bring his empty boat in every day. ... The next morning Manolin goes to wish Santiago luck, and Santiago already sailed out into the sea. The old man is out in the sea and he sees a bird and goes near it, Santiago then drops the lines hoping to capture a fish. ... Instead, he swims away, dragging the old man and his skiff along behind. ... A small bird land on the boat, and while Santiago is speaking to the bird; the marling lurches forward and pulls the old man down, cutting his hand.
