American Beauty Critique After watching the movie American Beauty we are left with a very disturbing picture of the American family. ... However, like many families in American society today, The Burnham family did not begin in this dysfunctional state. ... American Beauty does a very effective job of displaying the ways that many families slowly disintegrate in society today, and gives viewers a very realistic picture of what can happen when family members allow worldly desires and values to take over their lives. ... Although most families do not quote this philosophy to themselves like Carolyn does and would likely deny that they follow it, many American family’s practice the philosophy of “projecting an image of success at all times”. ... Another cause to the downfall of the American family shown in American Beauty is the lack of respect and communication the Burnham family gives to one another. ... As any viewer can see, the film American Beauty gives us a scary picture of the state of the American family. ... In American Beauty each family member began to become self absorbed in what they wanted from life rather than how to make one another’s lives better while helping themselves at the same time. ... American Beauty does an excellent job of showing the effects that this type of lifestyle can have on a family. Although every situation that occurs in American Beauty does not occur in every family, all of us can take something from the lessons that it teaches.
