The aborigines are the original inhabitants of this country we call Australia, but sadly they are a minority in it. And to prove this, let us consider their health status. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders people have a poorer health profile than any other Australian, or migrant group, for that matter. Factors associated with this issue, include: „h Lower socioeconomic status e.g. low incomes, high employment, poor education etc¡K „h Poorer nutrition „h Physical environment e.g. remoteness from services, poor quality of housing and facilities, overcrowding etc¡K „h The government¡¦s failure to provide adequate services Their current health statistics: „h Life expectancy is 20 years less than for non-Aboriginal Australians „h Aboriginal boys born today have only a 45% chance of living to age 65 and 54% for aboriginal girls, whereas its 81% for non-Aboriginal boys and 89% for non-Aboriginal girls. „h Age standardised death rates for Aboriginal males are 2.8 times those for non-Aboriginal males; age standardised death rates for Aboriginal females are 3.3 times those for non-Aboriginal females To understand why the aboriginal health status is as bad as it is, we need to go back to Australia¡¦s colonisation history.
