Nature of Evil in Othello
Throughout “Othello” Shakespeare puts emphasis on “the nature of evil,” through the use of the character, Iago. ... This plays a huge role in the tragedy, as the force of evil conquers the force of righteousness. ... ” In one of Iago’s first speeches to the audience, he not only reveals his motives for revenge on Othello, but also says “I am not what I am” (71). ... In following him I follow, but myself” (63-64) he is saying that his only reason for following Othello is to one day overthrow him and take his position. ... He is able to play the characters; Othello, Desdemona, Cassio, Roderigo, Bianca, Emilia, and others off of each other and against each other to achieve his goals. ... While taking on the façade of a helpful advisor, he convinces Cassio to speak with Desdemona (an appeal to her might help him win back his position with Othello).
